I have been teaching adults in college and university for over 15 years. My learners come from diverse grounds, including first-generation students and peoples historically under-represented in post-secondary education. It has been one of my greatest goals to help first-generation students transition into university life and to realize their true and full potential. I work hard to help students develop strong skills so that they have options and choices on their career paths and in their lives. I revel is seeing students take paths previously unconsidered ... like grad school, research jobs, or writing-intensive positions.
I have taught in History, Indigenous Studies, and Canadian Studies. My teaching tends towards writing-based courses - often personal and reflective - with core interests in history, Indigenous-state relations, reconciliation, research methodologies, pedagogy, colonialism, government policy, race/racialization, and identity. Canada has been my primary geographic area, but my teaching and research has also included the U.S., Australia, and Latin America.
I supervise students in independent study and thesis topics in my main teaching and research areas, as well as in areas such as decolonizing art, stereotypes, Indigenous pedagogies, decolonizing library work, and publishing student writing collections. I regularly supervise senior undergraduate students to be peer mentors, providing academic and personal support for first-year students navigating university life and Indigenous Studies content.
I am grateful for the Indigenous Elders, Cultural Teachers, and Knowledge Keepers I have had the privilege of co-teaching with. I have learned much from them and they have inspired me to take my work in unexpected directions.
